Overview of standards for the public

ICNIRP guidelines (2010)

In 50 Hz, here are the reference levels for the public:

  • Magnetic flux density: 200 µT
  • Electric field: 5 kV/m
  • Contact currents: 500 µA

EU recommendations (1999)

In 50 Hz, here are the reference levels for the public:

  • Magnetic flux density: 100 µT rms
  • Electric field: 5 kV/m rms
  • Contact currents: 500 µA

Around the world

Each country is free in the interpretation of recommendations and establishment of its own standards.

In 2018, a comparison of international policies on electromagnetic fields (power frequency and radiofrequency fields) was written by Rianne Stam, Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu (RIVM) - National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (The Netherlands).
